Ohio Camp Info – Camper Profile – Meet Scott – Application Process

Families travel from across the United States and overseas every summer so their sons can participate in this unique summer camp experience. Trip Camp is the only summer camp in North America specifically for boys with ADHD. While in Columbus, families can stay at a hotel where we have a discounted rate for camp families or at a local house rental (Air B&B, etc.)

Trip Camp is a day travel camp which campers attend Monday through Friday. Each day of camp begins with an interactive lesson in topics pertaining to social skills, independent skills, and (non-academic) executive function skills. The rest of the day is spent out on trips. An itinerary for the week is provided to registered camp families prior to their arrival at camp. Our “home base” for Trip Camp is in Bexley, a suburb of Columbus.

Trip Camp is a small program with a high camper return rate each year. As a result, there is limited availability for new campers.

Meet Scott

Hello, Trip Camp Families!

My name is Scott Jones, and I want to welcome you to Trip Camp in Columbus, Ohio! I have taught 4th and 5th grades for 23 years. I graduated from Denison University and received my Master of Education at The Ohio State University. For 16 years, I served as a counselor, staff, and camp director of various international summer camps.

In 2021, I became a father when I adopted a son with ADHD. Navigating the highs and lows of the teenage years, not to mention with ADHD, is exhausting. However, my son’s adoption instilled in me a sense of urgency in making sure my son had the tools, skills, and behaviors to be a productive, successful, and confident young man.

Being the Director of the inaugural Trip Camp in Columbus is an absolute thrill, and I look forward to meeting your family.

Trip Camp Application Process

Trip Camp utilizes a multi-step application process in order to ensure that prospective campers can be successful in the program. Please note that each year there are many more applicants than available spaces.

Before Beginning the Application Process

There are a few important things to note about Trip Camp before you begin your application process.

Applying to Trip Camp does not guarantee admission. Please read the information about campers’ profiles before beginning the application process.
After completing the application process families have two days to make a decision regarding enrollment. We cannot hold space for more than two days. A $400 deposit is required to enroll. Please note that if you chose to withdraw from camp after April 1st, 2025 this deposit is non-refundable. There are no exceptions to this policy.
Your son is not fully accepted into Trip Camp until a review of his medical forms occur. This is to assure that his health needs can be accommodated in the program.
Trip Camp is a screen-free camp. Your son will not be permitted to have a phone with him or other devices while he is at camp.
Photos and videos from Trip Camp are posted on ADHD Dude/Trip Camp social media. No identifying information about your son will ever be shared (aside from possibly his first name if it is used in a video). This policy is non-negotiable. If you do not want your son to appear in photos/videos he is not eligible to attend Trip Camp.
It is natural for parents of children with ADHD to engage in parental accommodation of their child's inflexibility. Part of the experience of Trip Camp is about teaching cognitive flexibility. We often find that our campers are much more capable of being flexible when they are amongst a group of similar-age peers. If you (or your son) expect others to accommodate his inflexibility Trip Camp would not a good fit for him. We are not a behavior modification program.
If we do not feel that we can offer a level of support that would allow your son to be successful at Trip Camp we will provide you with a referral to other camps that have a higher level of support.
Please note that there are no day or overnight camps that have similar programs to Trip Camp, despite what their marketing materials and social media may present.
We are not able to offer a level of support boys with an ASD diagnosis at Trip Camp as we have found that boys with an ASD profile often have difficulty tollerating being around a group of similar-age boys with ADHD. If you are looking for a camp for those with a higher-verbal autism profile we recommend Camp Akeela in Vermont.

Step 1

Start the Application

There is a $100 fee to begin the admission process for Trip Camp payable by check, PayPal or Zelle. You must sign a form agreeing to these terms.

Here is how the $100 fee will be applied:

If your son is accepted to camp and you enroll the $100 fee will be applied toward camp tuition.
If it is determined that your son would be better served by another camp program your $100 fee will be returned to you.,

Step 2

Submit Questionaire

You will be sent an online questionnaire to be filled out by one of your son’s current teachers who has observed your son working in groups at school. By forwarding this form you are waiving your right to view the form. The reason for this is because we want teachers to be able to answer the questions as honestly as possible, without fear of backlash from parents.

Step 3

Informal Interview

If we believe your son could be successful in Trip Camp we will ask you to set up a brief, informal online interview with your son so we can meet him. (There is no charge for this and it will take no longer than 10 minutes.) During this informal interview, we ask to speak with applicants without parents present as we have found that having parents present results in applicants being distracted, self-conscious or parents prompt them how to answer our questions.

Step 4

Registration

After your son’s informal interview you will have 2 days to decide if you would like to move forward and register him for camp. If you would like to move forward we will send you the online application. A $400.00 deposit is required to reserve your son’s spot in camp. If you choose not to enroll your son please note that the $100.00 application fee is not refundable. If you withdraw your son’s enrollment after April 1, 2025, the $400 deposit is non-refundable.

Families who are interested in beginning the application process need to add themselves to the camp mailing list a year in advance.
Should there be space available, you will receive an email with information to begin the application process.
